Northgate Academy’s Algebra 1 course offers a comprehensive journey into the world of algebra, beginning with a foundational review of equation-solving techniques. Students quickly move beyond the basics to master linear equations in various forms, delve into the intricacies of exponents, and explore the rich concepts of functions, including notation, domain and range, and multiple representations. This course emphasizes practical application through modeling and regression techniques, allowing students to apply linear models to data and make predictive analyses using lines of best fit. With a curriculum designed to build a robust understanding of mathematical principles, students will contrast additive and multiplicative changes through the study of linear and exponential functions, setting a solid groundwork for more complex topics.

As students progress, they will be challenged to extend their knowledge to quadratic and exponential expressions, focusing particularly on quadratics, and will gain an introduction to radical functions. The course is structured around the “Algebra I Concepts” textbook by Joseph G. Williams, ensuring that learners have access to high-quality materials that support the course objectives. By the end of this course, students will be adept at analyzing expressions, using a variety of representations to communicate mathematical concepts, and solving complex equations and inequalities. Northgate Academy’s Algebra 1 course equips students with the skills and knowledge to confidently approach algebraic problems, paving the way for success in further mathematical studies and real-world applications.

High School Algebra 1 Concepts Syllabus

This course begins with a brief review of what students should already know about solving equations, with a focus on analyzing and explaining the process of solving equations. Students develop a strong foundation in working with linear equations in all forms, extending solution techniques to simple equations with exponents. Students explore functions, including notation, domain and range, multiple representations, and modeling. Through the comparison of linear and exponential functions, students contrast the concepts of additive and multiplicative change. Students then apply what they have learned to linear models of data and using lines of best fit to apply regression techniques. The course closes with an exploration of integer exponents, quadratic and exponential expressions with a heavy emphasis on quadratics, and an introduction to radical functions.
