Course Description

Northgate Academy’s English 10 course builds on the foundational skills established in English 9, guiding students to become more effective readers and writers through a Christian perspective. The course encompasses a broad spectrum of literary forms, from biblical passages to contemporary literature, including short stories, nonfiction, poetry, dramas, and novels. Through basic literary analysis, students learn to enhance their reading comprehension and analytical skills, employing techniques such as making inferences, visualization, predicting outcomes, and recognizing organizational patterns. The curriculum incorporates vocabulary development, diverse writing styles and techniques, and the fundamentals of grammar, usage, and mechanics, encouraging students to refine their literary analysis and writing skills.

English 10 is a comprehensive introductory language arts course designed to create effective readers and writers while guiding students with practical skills and wisdom they can use in their Christian lives. Students are presented with a wide variety of literary forms including passages from the Bible, short stories, nonfiction, poetry, a novel, drama, and novel excerpts. Through the implementation of basic literary analysis skills, students understand and apply strategies to maximize reading comprehension and develop analytical skills. Analytical techniques include making inferences, applying visualization, predicting, and developing an awareness of organizational patterns. Each module includes lessons about vocabulary skills; writing techniques and styles, including the Writing Process; and grammar, usage, and mechanics. Northgate Academy follows the Carnegie Credit system, a widely recognized method of measuring student progress based on instructional hours. A single Carnegie credit reflects approximately 120 hours of coursework, typically completed over a full academic year.

Carnegie Credit vs. Trimester Credit
While Carnegie credits are awarded based on total hours over a year, trimester credits divide the school year into three terms. In a trimester system, students complete courses in shorter, intensive sessions, often earning partial credits (e.g., 0.33 or 0.5 per term). In contrast, Northgate’s use of Carnegie credits ensures students have ample time to engage deeply with the material and develop a well-rounded understanding at a consistent pace.
